Introduction

Ammonites are probably the most iconic of all fossils. The beautiful spiral shape of their shells makes them greatly valued among fossil collectors. Not surprisingly, they have attracted man's attention since prehistoric times.

As prized yet mysterious objects, a rich folklore has developed around ammonites. There are numerous myths about their origin, and many beliefs about their magical and medicinal properties.
