Rhinoceros, 1739.
Oil on canvas, 122 x 147 cm.
In 1739 the arrival of a living rhinoceros in London caused
a sensation. Placed on public display, people paid the equivalent
today of £15.00 to see this amazing animal that had
previously only been seen as illustrations in books. James
Parsons took the opportunity to carefully observe the animal
and complete this splendid painting.
