Thin, elongated, spiky clusters of white aragonite crystals.
The Mineralogy specimen database contains information about the specimens in the Museum's Mineralogy Department collections.
There are around 417,000 specimens and they are managed as five specialist groups:
The database includes information on the specimens from all five groups.
There are three ways to search the database.
The options available in the detailed search are specific to the category or group selected from the 'type of specimen' drop-down list.
All search results are displayed as a list. Select a record to see more details on that specimen.
Some records may have more information than others, reflecting priorities within our databasing strategy. We are currently working to fill these gaps and enhance the records with research-related information.
Be aware that information has been extracted from hand-written registers. You may discover old classification or geographical terms. Please be patient while we work to correct these. Our aim is to deliver accurate data, so if you see an error please let us know.
The information on this website, including images, is covered by the Natural History Museum website Terms of use.
Some of the images in the database are available for commercial use through the Natural History Museum's Picture library.
