FAMOS Workpackage Three

Numerical modelling

In WP3 we aim to provide a quantitative understanding of the coupled physical and chemical processes that lead to the release of a focussed, metal-rich magmatic volatile phase (MVP) from a crustal magma reservoir with the chemical characteristics identified in WP2, along with key triggers that may facilitate or inhibit this critical step in the formation of a porphyry ore deposit.

The modelling will address:

  • Is the release of a metal-rich MVP consistent with a magma mush or chamber model? A chamber is implicit or explicit in most prior porphyry models.
  • What are the key controls on release of a metal-rich MVP from a magma reservoir?
  • How do trace element concentrations respond to magma reservoir processes and can these yield fingerprints for interpretation of natural samples (WP1)?
