Diagnostic Features
  • Periproct displaced laterally from the anterior-posterior axis towards ocular I; ocular plate I insert.
  • Apical disc small and raised above the corona; with indented sutures and prominent sutural pits which house tubercles.
  • Distinct ring of small tubercles along the inner margins of genital plates bounding the periproct.
  • Ambulacral plating trigeminate adorally and trigeminate or unigeminate aborally.
  • Ambital and adapical interambulacral tubercles perforate and crenulate, oral interambulacral tubercles and all ambulacral tubercles imperforate.
  • Single suranal plate incorporated into disc.
Distribution

Classification and/or Status

Carinacea, Calycina, Salenioida; stem group Saleniidae.

Presumed paraphyletic by exclusion of Polysalenia and Novasalenia.

Remarks

Can be separated into two species groups, a Jurassic complex characterized by having ambulacral plating simple (unigeminate) adapically and a Cretaceous group which has trigeminate plating throughout. The Jurassic species should probably be separated into a new genus.
