Brown algae (Ochrophyta)

Brown algae range in size from single-celled organisms to giant kelps which can be over 50 metres long.

They are mostly marine organisms although there are also some freshwater representatives with microscopic branched filaments.

The group contains about 1,800 species, mostly in the Laminariales and Fucales orders.
