The Dammed Rainforest
In 2012, after decades of delays, controversy and fierce local and international opposition, construction of the Belo Monte Dam hydroelectric complex on the Xingu River in Brazil’s Amazon rainforest picked up speed. By 2019, it will be the world’s third largest hydroelectric project. The ecological and social cost will include loss of rainforest and biodiversity, and the displacement of 20,000-40,000 indigenous people. Daniel flew over the construction area in Pará state for Greenpeace.
