In the summer holidays, Ilkka often goes fishing on the shores of Lake Saimaa. He has been photographing common terns here since he was seven years old. 'They're not shy and come really close,' he says. What fascinates him most is the way they fly. 'They have long wings, which make it look as though their body springs up when their wings go down. They dive at high speed, sometimes so deep that they go right under the surface. I love photographing the action and the way the light sparkles through the water drops.' Ilkka shares the guts from his fishing catch with the terns. The rest he takes back to the cottage for his family's favourite summer supper: fresh fish fried in butter.
