Brief history

Founded in 1913 by Eduard Paul Tratz as "Ornithological Institut" with the main aim to organize an Austrian bird-ringing scheme. In 1924 the ornithological Institute was transferred into a universal natural history museum. From 1938 to 1945 the museum was part of the 'SS-Ahnenerbe' organisation. E.P. Tratz was arrested in 1945 by the American forces and Maximilian Piperek took over as director. In 1949 Tratz was rehabilitated and returned as director. After the death of Tratz in 1976 Eberhard Stuber was the next director, his successor since 2009 on is Norbert Winding. The museum is organised as a private non-profit association. The main part of the bird collection (skins) was collected and bought by Tratz during the foundation period. The collection contains material from Viktor Tschusi zu Schmidhoffen (~ 1,000), an Abessinan collection from Ohneiser und Steinigner (collected on an expedition of the Field Museum Chicago) and a few specimens from Julius Michel and Guido Schiebel. The collection contains also endangered and extinct species, eg. A dodo skeleton, imperial woodpecker, passenger pigeon and a slender billed curlew).
