 What is the UK species inventory ?

The UK species inventory aims to provide standard reference names for all species of flora and fauna in the UK, bringing all of the names together in one place.

Around 70,000 species of animals, plants, fungi and single-celled organisms occur in the UK.

UK species inventory is formed by gathering species names from comprehensive and authoritative checklists compiled by government agencies, scientific experts and conservation organisation.

 Specialists create checklists of species names for

  • defined taxonomic groups
  • species affected by a piece of legislation
  • species conservation status

The UK species database compiles recorded information from over 200 checklists, covering various taxonomic groups or regions and currently contains over 275,000 names, including:
