The Echinoid Directory

Kieritiaris Vadet, 2001, p. 69

Diagnostic Features
  • Based on two fragments of interambulacrum (each comprising just 2-3 adoral plates) with associated ambulacral plates (incomplete).
  • Interambulacral plates appear firmly sutured; adradial suture denticulate (and thus imbricate).
  • Interambulacral plate with two to three subequal primary tubercles; a few much smaller tubercles along adradial plate margins.
  • All tubercles perforate and non-crenulate, with smooth parapet developed around mamelon.
  • Ambulacral plates simple and uniserial.
  • Small but distinct muscle attachment ridges on adoral interambulacral plates; comprising a larger interradial ridge and two adradial ridges that appear to extend onto ambulacral plates forming feeble auricles.
Distribution
Upper Triassic (Carnian); Italy.
Name gender feminine
Type
Kieritiaris thieli Vadet, 2001, p. 70, by original designation. Type in private collection.
Species Included
  • Only the type species.
Classification and/or Status

Probably a member of the Euechinoidea stem group.

Indeterminate.

Remarks

Kier (1977) treated this fragment as indeterminate, but Vadet (2000), based on a second fragment, created a new species, genus and family (Kieritiaridae) for it. So little is known about it that it is indeterminate even to subclass level. It may be conspecific with the indeterminate fragment described by Bather as Hemipedina incipiens, and placed by Vadet in another new genus Batheritiaris.
