Diagnostic Features
  • Test ovate in outline; no anterior sulcus.
  • Apical disc disjunct with posterior ocular plates widely separated and also a short distance above the periproct. Ocular plates II and IV meeting behind genital plate 2. Genital plates 1 and 4 small. Interambulacral series 1 and 4 separated by single or double irregular row of elongate catenal plates linking anterior and posterior parts of apical disc.
  • Posterior oculars and associated ambulacra separated from periproct by at least one pair of interambulacral plates.
  • Ambulacra all similar; subpetaloid; pore-pairs small and circumflexed; extending to ambitus before reducing in size. Aboral plates relatively low, wide and closely packed.
  • Short phyllodes developed (5-6 pore-pairs enlarged towards peristome); one of each pair of basicoronal ambulacral plates with two pore-pairs.
  • Peristome anterior of centre, small, subcircular; facing downwards.
  • Plastron plating protosternous.
  • Peripoct small, tear-drop-shaped and just supramarginal; not sunken and no subanal indentation. Catinal plates usually present between posterior oculars and start of periproct.
  • Tuberculation fine scattered tubercles set in groundmass of granules.

Irregularia; Stem group Atelostomata; Collyritidae.

Probably paraphyletic.

Remarks

Distinguished from the rather similar Pygomalus and Pygorhytis by having the posterior ambulacra and their oculars separated from the periproct by at least one pair of interambulacral plates. Distinguished from Cyclolampas by the lack of well-developed phyllodes. Cardiopelta and Proholaster are very similar in test architecture but both have a frontal groove.
