My daughter bought a grapevine from our local morrisons about 4 weeks ago. We then noticed some droppings on the floor, and discovered what we think is a vine hawk moth caterpillar. We want to do the best for it, but not many people have offered help on how to best care for it and now the caterpillar is turning brown, (see photos). We are hoping this is because it is turning into a pupae? and not because it is unwell? Any advise/help?
If it was a small elephant hawk moth caterpillar shouldn't the second eye-like marking be fuller and the horn smaller. Laura's suggestion looks a better match to me, especially as it was found on a vine.
Thanks for the help with the I.D, it certainly looks like the Silver Striped Hawk Moth. It has today (after a very long walk around the conservatory!) taken itself back into the pot of soil the plant is in and has come to rest on top of the soil, it has then wrapped a leave loosly around itself. I am hoping it will now pupate? Fingers crossed. Do you have any idea if it will be able to survive the British climate as a moth?!
