I caught this insect dozing on the inside roof of my conservatory, I thought it was a wasp but I've not ever seen any this big before so maybe it's something else. it's an inch long and it's wings are definitely more fly like but I can't find any images of a anything like it with the yellow between it's eyes - is it a wasp or horsefly or something else? Any suggestions please?
Your excellent pictures are of the hoverfly Volucella zonaria. It's a large species of hoverfly with a wingspan of around 45mm and it does a great impression of a hornet. Hoverflies are true flies rather than bees or wasps, and are harmless.
