Butterfly

Hi can anyone ID this for me please?blue butterfly.jpg

    I think the top pic is a Holly Blue. Can't help with the second except that it is apparently newly hatched and attempting to expand its wings.

      I agree, and I think the second one might be a moth (but we can't see enough to ID it).

        All with crumpled wings?!

         

        A few species of moths do have crumpled wings by design, eg. Angle shades (and more outside the UK).

        But this looks to be something different (I wonder about farm chemicals interfering with the moths' development.)


        If you can come up with some more photos, I would be interested in having a further go at giving you an ID. I am sure Wortmaggot is intrigued, too!

          Yes indeed. Quite worrying if there were a load of these poor crippled creatures attempting to fly. I guess they might all have hatched but been unable to find a 'perch' to rest on in order to expand their wings properly. I do know that if disturbed during this process, they can be put off, and the wings remain crumpled :'-(
