Fossil, bone or weirdly shaped stone?

Please call me an idiot if this is obvious, but I found this weirdly shaped stone by the river and I can't help wondering if there is somethng more to it. Can anyone help identify it, or offer any tips for a complete novice on how you can actually tell the difference between bones, stones and fossils? Is it just something that you learn with experience?

Thanks,

Misa

    Hi Misa

You had your head well down, interesting item!  Finds are not always obvious and identification comes with experience

From your picture it appears to be a recent  bone  I imagine waterlogged giving it weight, its a hing-joint/ knee  probably a Cow
