Can someone tell me what this butterfly is please. It was on our flowers for a while but I never managed to see its inner wings as it always had them closed and flew too fast to get a clear view.
It was about 15mm across the widest part of its closed wings.

It is a small heath, Coenonympha pamphilus.
Nice to have it visit your garden.
Another one of the 'browns' that might visit those flowers is the gatekeeper, Pyronia tithonus
Keep an eye out!
Also: well done for taking a good photo (showing the subject and its flowers well-lit and without too much wasted space), and for posting it in a nice small file size without losing essential detail.
Thank you for the kind remarks; The information is most helpful.
