My wife and I found this bone washed up on Aberavon beach in South Wales today. At first we thought that it might be the scapula of a marine mammal but after reading another thread on here and Googling some images I now think it may be a cow scapula. But we would love to know exactly what it is.
It is surprisingly heavy for a bone and is black, as can be seen from photos. We are wondering if the colour means it is quite old.
You are quite right this is a cow scapula, horse are similar but sufficiently different to tell the difference. Bones which decompose in anaerobic conditions are often blackened and this does not necessarily indicate age.
