I found this fish on the beach in Sandgate in Kent this morning after last nights storm.
It was dead - so no chance to throw it back.
It was about 14 inches long and about an inch wide at its head.
Is it a Red Band Fish??
I am only asking as from what I have read I didn't think they were found on this bit if the coast but obviously the storm are throwing all sort of things up!
It looks like you're right Michelle, as MarLIN http://www.marlin.ac.uk/speciesinformation.php?speciesID=2920 describes it as unmistakable, & it fits their photo & description, if not their distribution map. A truly remarkable find.
There have been so many weird things thrown up onto the beach - I could spend hours beachcombing!
Thanks for the reply!!
Actually the correct name is Red Bandfish (without the gap), or Cepola Macrophthalma.
Incidentally,at the time of posting the scientific name (ie in MarLIN) was C. rubescens; nevertheless the old MarLIN link still connects to the 'new' Red Bandfish
