Trying to identify this rock like object....

Found this washed up on the shore on the south coast of Devon...

 

It has an earthy texture and is fairly soft (can make an indent with your nail on the surface). It also breaks up when you rub the surface but has quite a unique composition, not like any soil. Its weight just less than a kilo and is the size of my hand.

 

Initially had some suspicions it was ambergris but has only a very faint scent and sinks when I place it in water.

 

Does anyone have any ideas as to what it may be?
