Very large hover fly?

Its frustrating being without a camera but maybe someone can help with this ID?

This fly was on my car bonnet the other day and apparently feeding on minerals in the dust.  At first I thought it must be a tabanid.  Its proboscis looked very long and sharp at first glance, but when it put it on the car it did have a small double-lobed pad at the end like a regular fly.

It was probably the biggest fly I have ever seen, the same shape as a big flesh fly (Sarcophaga), only larger.  It was fairly furry and a pretty lightish brown or tan base colour, the same all over the thorax, with yellow stripes on the abdomen as with a typical hover fly.  I estimate it was at least 1 and 1/2 cm long and just over a cm wide.
