I found this huge Diptera egg-laying in foam sack by the edge of a muddy pond. It was about a inch long, please can someone help with its ID. Thanks. Peter. The images were taken in Bernwood Forest Oxon.
It looks a lot like a giant horsefly to me.
But I am no expert, and I have no idea if these lay eggs on leaves.
Thank you for the ID of the heaviest of the European flies. A micro monster indeed!
