Could this be a fossilised claw?

I found this fossil whilst browsing the shore at walton on the naze. It looks alot like a claw of some kind. I'm wondering if anyone can confirm this and if it is indeed a fossil then would anyone know what animal it came from and how old it is. Thanks.

    James,

    Interesting.

Good photo (small file size but good detail and lighting).

Does it seem heavy for its size?

I know it is showing only hints of rust, but its shape suggests a well-corroded old eye-nail (the eye having completely cloed-up). Victorians and earlier used eye-nails for supports for vine wires in walled gardens.

    Just a thought.

    Mike
