Parides agavus female upperside
This species occurs in South America, with a range from south-east Brazil to Paraguay and Argentina (Tyler et al, 1994).
Specimens at the Natural History Museum London have been recorded in:

- Minas Gerais
- Castro
- San Jacinto Valley
- Ouro Preto
- Argentina:
- Entre Rios
- Paraguay:
- Yhu
- Sapucay
- Asuncion
These butterflies seem to have a preference for dense vegetation cover with low light levels (de Morais and Brown, 1991).
The highest populations of Parides agavus can be found in areas that have not been disturbed by man and have plenty of food resources for the adults (Paim and Di Mare, 2002).
