Notes

172 records

This is another of the species that Gooday (1981) described from the complex of species that had previously fallen within the scope of Müller’s (1891) original description of a long form of Conchoecia rotundata. Iles (1953) proposed the name C. skogsbergi for the long form, citing Skogsberg’s (1920) description as the definitive description for the species. In analysing specimens from the North Atlantic it soon became apparent that there were a number of taxa that could be considered to be ‘long forms’ of rotundata, but did not conform to Skogsberg’s description. These Gooday (1981) described as separate species. He examined a variety of material and identified specimens of this species in some of Müller’s Tiefsee material. Its known distribution is 43°S to 60°N although as the map shows the majority of records are from the North Atlantic. The bathymetric profiles show that it is a shallow mesopelagic species, and at depths of 200-400m numerically it can be the dominant component of the halocyprid assemblage.
