First Fleet artwork collection

A view of Lord Howe Island, with the two highest peaks on the right of the composition labelled "a" and "b". The land is coloured pale blue-green overlaid with grey and black stippled markings, and is shaded to the left side of the hills on the left hand side and the right on the right hand side, where the peaks terminate in brown cliff faces. There is a wide variation in height, with the highest peaks to the right (south) of the island and the lowest land to the left of the centre. The sea, represented by a gradated wash of pale blue through yellow and pink to blue and overlaid in the foreground with short grey horizontal lines, occupies the lower quarter of the composition. The sky occupies the upper three-quarters and is represented by a pink wash on the horizon, with unpainted areas and patches of blue wash indicating clouds above. The drawing is framed by a triple-banded border, the central band of which is coloured with a pink wash. It is inscribed with the title and key in brown ink below the border, to the left.
