  • The drawing is inscribed in black ink at top "VIEWS of LORD HOWE ISLAND ~ Disc:d by LIEU:t BALL. February 1788 ~". Each drawing is inscribed with navigational information in a panel below it, spaced so as to correspond with the features depicted. The top view is inscribed "VALLEY e. 1/2 N. 14 Leagues", "A~ P.t KING E.N.E.", "VALLEY - E.b N. 10 Leag.s" and "B. BALLS-PYRAMID E.1/4 S. 14 Leags -", the middle "A N.E.bN.1/2E." and "E.N.E. 6 or 7 Leag.s" and "East.", and the bottom "N.1/4E.", C Mt: LIDGBIRD N.N.E 1/4 E."
  • The drawing is unsigned and undated, but is attributed to Raper.
  • The drawing is inscribed in pencil at lower left with the number "26", at top right "25", and on the reverse "52".
  • Raper is not known to have landed on Lord Howe Island but passed by it on his journey to Norfok Island on board the Sirius in March 1790. Captain John Hunter recorded the occasion in An Historical Journal of the Transactions at Port Jackson and Norfolk Island (London, 1793) (pp. 172-3).
