"Hawksbury Duck"

Bird in profile, facing to the left. It is depicted standing on a rock which is painted in washes of pale pink, yellow, brown and grey, surrounded by water, with a distant landscape of hills. The bird has a brown head with a darker tuft at the back of the neck. The breast is buff coloured with black markings, the flank is grey overlaid with black striations, and the belly is black. The wing is grey with green white and black patches. The drawing is annotated in ink and pencil and framed by a pencil border.

  • The drawing is annotated in ink at bottom "This species of Duck is found at Hawkesbury: sometimes perching upon trees."
  • The drawing is signed in pale brown ink at lower centre "T. Watling, delt.", but is undated.
  • The drawing is annotated in ink at top right with the number "285". This refers to the catalogue list compiled by John Latham c. 1801 which was acquired with the drawings, and is filed with them at the end of the Watling Drawings series.
  • The drawing is annotated in pencil at top "Hawksbury Duck Syn Sup ii 358 Pl - Title page - Male". This has been copied in ink at bottom "Hawksbury Duck Latham Syn Suppt 2. p. 358. Plate title page A. Male,". The page reference is to Latham's Second Supplement to the General Synopsis of Birds (1802).
  • This bird was more recently identified as the Maned Goose, Chenonetta jubata in Hindwood K. A. (1970).
  • The drawing is annotated in pencil at top "Lambert Drawing I. 76". This refers to a related set of drawings from the collections of the 13th Earl of Derby, held in the Library at Knowsley Hall, Lancashire.
  • There are two separate labels attached to the mount, one alongside the drawing at lower right and the other below it. Both are inscribed in pencil "Type". A note on the data sheet for this drawing states "N.B. Probably one of these should be mounted with another drawing, as both are prob. written by G. Mathews".
  • The author of this catalogue record is Suzanne Stenning.
