  • The drawing is inscribed in blue pencil at top right with the number "19", which refers to the pre-1984 numbering system for the Watling Collection.
  • The drawing is inscribed in black ink at bottom with the title "Taken from the West side of Sydney Cove", followed in brown ink and what appears to be a different hand "behind the Hospital".
  • The drawing is signed in brown ink at lower right "Thomas Watling, delt.-", but is undated.
  • Wheeler and Smith (1988) suggest that this drawing may have been used as the basis for the oil painting entitled "A Direct North General View of Sydney Cove 1794", in the Dixson Gallery, State Library of New South Wales, Sydney, which is attributed to Watling.
  • The author of this catalogue record is Suzanne Stenning.
