hide detailed image description

A monochrome view of the settlement at Sydney Cove, looking westwards. The composition is bisected from right to left by a wooden fence which separates the rough, uncultivated area in the immediate foreground from the developed land behind. A path leads from the lower right towards a gap in the fence behind Government House, which is depicted in back view. The roofs of houses leading down to the Tank Stream are visible behind the fence, and at left a row of houses with gardens can be seen on the far side of the stream. The western arm of the Cove appears quite built-up, and the flag-staff is depicted towards the far shore at right. A ship is moored in the harbour to the right, in front of the wooded north shore. The sky is represented by washes of grey with outlines of clouds and some unpainted areas. The drawing is framed by a black ink border, and inscribed with the title in copperplate script below.
