hide detailed image description

View of a European ship anchored in a crescent-shaped bay, surrounded by indigenous canoes with curved prows and outriggers. The ship's boat is being rowed towards the shore to the left. The bay is fringed by a sandy beach backed by dense foliage, with rocky arms extending towards the foreground of the composition. A few huts and fences are visible amongst the foliage, which is represented by mottled grey-green and fawn layers with schematic clumps of palm trees. The sea is represented by washes of blue with horizontal grey lines, and the sky with a pink wash on the horizon and a band of blue wash towards the top. The drawing is framed with a thick black ink line and a triple-banded border, the central band of which is coloured with a pink wash and contains the title panel at the bottom. The signature and date are located in the inner band at lower right. Most of the outer band appears to have been lost through the drawing having been cropped.
