hide detailed image description

Portrait of an aboriginal man, apparently named as Gna.na.gna.na. He is depicted from the back, with his head turned in profile to the right and his arms slightly raised to the right, against a plain background. His hair is short and represented by layers of wavy brush marks. His facial hair (eyebrows, eyelashes, beard) is depicted in fine black linear detail. His right arm is decorated with a band of yellow binding. His upper arm and back are marked with black and dull red lines which have a slight sheen or glaze, representing cicatrices. The drawing is framed on three sides by a triple-banded border outlined in black ink, with the central band coloured with a blue wash. The blue band is missing from the left hand edge, which appears to have been cropped.
