Subject: host hormones and parasite behavior

Hello,

I am interested in learning where anyone out there works on, or knows
examples of, hormonal communication between mites and their parasitic
or phoretic hosts.

Is anyone on the acarology list interested in the effect of  honeybee JH
on reproduction in Varroa?

I would appreciate communication on the topic.

Thanks you.

Subject:  oribatids in chinese deserts and steppes

Dear collegues,
I look for references concerning fauna (including first descriptions of
new taxons) and ecology of oribatids in arid and semi-arid areas of
China (Inner Mongolia, Xinquian-Uigur Autonomous Region). Does exist any
check-list of species for this region? Also I would be happy to contact
with any person who explore oribatids in this region.

                                    thank you.

Subject:  SEM technique for Eriophyids

Dear Acarologist

I am seeking for useful information about techniques of preparation of eriophyids mites.
I heard Italian acarologists reviewed the eriophyids preparation methods for SEM.
But, I can see only the source of the paper as following;
(Zuzzaci, G., E. de Lillo & R.G. Mariani. 1991. Scanning microscopy in acarology; a new technique of preparation of eriophyids preserved in different ways. Boll. Soc. Ital. Genova. 132(1) : 3-8. )

Could anyone give me a big favor about the technique to preparate eriophyids for SEM and the way to get the paper?

Thanks in advance,

Jong-Ho Lee

Heather,

Check this address: Tom Atyeo's at  atyeo@uga.cc.uga.edu.
He answers snail mail but I'm not sure about e-mail.

Good luck.

Sabina

Subject:  thanks for my question for SEM technique for eriophid mites

Dear kind acarologists!

Thank you for your kind and useful answer for SEM technique for eriophyid mites. I would like to share the information with other acarologist. The messages that I got are as the followings.

(Regretfully, I think I have to omit the sender name, because I got the messages through my email account not through "Acarology" list)

Anyway, I would like to give special thanks to all the acarologists who gave me information.

Dear Dr. Jong-Ho Lee,
please write for reprint directly to Dr. G. Nuzzaci (not Zuzzaci), Instituto di Entomologia Agraria, Universita degli studi di Bari, Via Amendola 165, I-70 126 Bari, Italy, Phone 39-80-242 872, FAX 39-80-242 876.
I can recommend you to attempt a very simple method with I successfully used for preparation of some pyroglyphid mites for SEM: Put mites directly to ethylether for several minutes or hours up to the ether penetrate into the mites. Then spill the ether with mites to filter paper and quickly dry by heating on the histological plate. The ethylether evaporate quickly and sweel the mites.
     I wish you many success.

Dear Dr. Lee
on the paper Nuzzaci, G., E. de Lillo & R.G. Mariani. 1991. Scanning
microscopy in acarology; a new technique of preparation of eriophyids
preserved in different ways. Boll. Soc. Ital. Genova. 132(1): 3-8 was
reported a method to observe dried specimens.

You can find more information on a specific chapter (authors: Alberti and
Nuzzaci) of the Eriophyoid Mites from the World Crop Series by Elsevier.

Let me know if you need more information.

My best wishes

<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
I suggest you contact Antonella Di Palma (antonella.dipalma@agr.uniba.it)
or Enrico de Lillo (delillo@agr.uniba.it). They are the specialists in this
field

<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
I read your request on SEMming Eriophyids at acarology listserv. The one
thing that I would like to mention is that the last name of the first
author is not Zuzzaci but Nuzzaci who did some nice works on mouthparts of
eriophyids.
Regarding the preparation of eriophyids for SEM, you can apply the idea of
critical point drying for the gall formers. For those guys, just put the
entire gall that has bunch of eriophyids in it into 100% acetone TWICE.
100% EtOH is also a very nice one for this process. The next step is drying
them under critical point dryer. Freeze drying does not give you a good
result. After the drying, carefully break the gall under stereo microscope
to mount onto the stub. It worked to me.
For the leaf vagrants, kill them at 100% EtOH or acetone, carefully tranfer
them onto the stub, and then coat them with gold.
For the small insects, some people use very highly toxic chemical, HMDS,
for drying process. I do not think that this is necessary for the mites.
Charging, of course, is another problem, but modern scopes can fix it.

Dear acarologists,

I am trying to locate what is left of Hans Lohmann's halacarid material. A
small proportion of it is housed in the Zoological Museum in Hamburg (Viets
collection). But where is the rest ? Any information leading to the
discovery of further specimens would be greatly appreciated.

Subject:  Balaustium

Dear friends,

I am trying to establish the identity of some specimens belonging to the
genus Balaustium (Erythraeidae). I would like to examine the specimens of
Balaustium murorum (Hermann 1804) from Switzerland that were re-described by
Schweizer (1951). These specimens should be in the Natural History Museum in
Basel, Switzerland, but it appears that they cannot be found there.  Has
anyone examined or borrowed these specimens in recent years, or know where
they might be found?

Thank you for your help.
