UPDATE ON THE 2002 ACAROLOGY SUMMER PROGRAM

It has taken us some time, but the web-page for the Acarology Summer
Program (http://www.biosci.ohio-state.edu/~acarolog/sum2k1.htm ) has been
updated to reflect the addition of Agricultural Acarology to this years
line-up. This means that the program will include workshops in
Introductory, Soil, Agricultural, and Medical-Veterinary Acarology.
Please note that the addition of Agricultural Acarology has also caused
some rearrangements in the Soil Acarology workshop.

Subject: Orbatid Emergency!!

I am a final year PhD researcher at the University of Stirling, Scotland.

My project includes the study of two rabbit cestodes for which mites are
intermediate hosts.

We have recently discovered that our attempts to infect Caloglyphus berlesei
have failed and that we really need to use orbatids.

We are desperately trying to find a source of 'clean' mites. The problem is
that the lengthy life cycle of the orbatids, precludes our collecting mites
from the field to breed clean colonies.

I am keenly hoping that someone on this list may have (or know of a source
of ) orbatids that I could use.

The species named as possible intermediates from an early study are:

Xenillus tegeocranus
Scutovertex minutus (the most commonly infected)
Cepheus cepheiformis
Trichoribates incisellus
Scheloribates laevigatus

However this is not necessarily an exhaustive list. The key seems to be that
the mites mode of cestode egg consumption should NOT normally be to take
them whole.

Many thanks

Subject: Parthenogenesis and Wolbachia

Dear acarologists,

We are currently studying the parthenogenetic capacity of Rhipicephalus
appendiculatus and R. zambeziensis. Because of certain population
differences, we would like to know if some of these tick populations
contain Wolbachia or not.
Is there a possibility to have our populations screened by someone?

Kind regards,

Maxime

Hie everybody !!
I'm a PhD student working on the acaricidal effect of sulphur on
Tetranychus urticae. I would like to make some histology on these mites in
order to see what is (are) the target(s) of sulphur.
I would like to know what is the method used to prepare such mites
(coloration, fixation...).
Does somebody can help me?
After, I would also like to make electron microscopy to see if
mitochondrion are affected by sulphur, so if you got informations on this
subject ...
Thank you in advance.

Subject: Question about the genome of mite

Dear Acarologists:

I am studying the functional genomics and proteomics of house dust mite
focusing on dust mite allergen issue. We have generate thousands of EST
sequences and number of Protein fingerprint profiles.
But I do not know whether there are some pioneer scienctists have revealed
the genome size of mite and initiate a pilot study of genome sequencing
project for acari. Because of the lack of genomic sequence information, the
proteomics study is realy difficult.
Does anybody can encourage us to propose a project for the proteomics of one
model mite for the benefit of world-wide interested acarologist?
Is there any necessary to establish the network of acari genomics like other
genome program in order to understand the functioanl biology of acari at the
molecaular level?
Any response will be greatly appreciated.

Dear all,
In the issue 19 (1995) of Experimental and Applied Acarology, guest editor N. van Straalen compiled four articles on the effects of pollution on mite fauna in soil. I have a copy of the first one, by Lebrun and van Straalen, and of course I would like to read the other three. Can anyone pass me the references and the addresses to ask them for a reprint?.

Thanks!!!.

Dear Dr. Weigmann,

I would like to contact you on behalf of your position as president of
EURAAC.

Together with several collegues form different Europena countries, who
are participating in the WG5 COST 836 Action "Integrated research in
Berries" we have identified at our last meeting several arthropod pests
for which biological control measures which should be developed and/or
tested.
Amongst other arthropod pests phytophagous mites (mainly "spider mites"
and tarsonemids) are classified as important pests; for their control
predatory mites should be further tested as biocontrol agents.

However most collegues face the problem that they cannot identify
themselves both the phytophagous and/or the predatory mite species
present on e.g starwberries.

As I have taken over the task to contact acaralogist specialist
orgainsations, I would like to ask, whether within EURAAC are collegues
who are wolling to carry out the identification of mites samples  for
pre-assessment of species composition in trial areas (of course
conditions, fess etc . should be known).

Would you be so kind to help with the distribution of our request, or to
help me with a list of collegues in EURAAC which I could contact with my
request.

For your help thank you very much in advance.

Sincerely Yours
