Radomir Jakubowski (Germany) uses twilight to contrast the warm colours of the pine trees with the forest glade beyond.
As the Sun set, it felt magical in the pine forest. ‘I love the silence of this forest and the sound of the ocean waves running through it,’ says Radomir. He’d visited the spot time and time again hoping for these conditions - a cloudless sky and the sea reflecting the last light of the day into the trees.
Often planted as a windbreak against the onshore breeze, evergreen forests can be a refuge from the summer heat for small mammals and birds.
Most pine species are fire adapted, with mature trees having thick, fire-resistant bark. Their seeds are contained within huge cones that take three years to mature and are dispersed either by birds or scattered after fire has burned off the undergrowth.
Though heat helps to open their cones to release their seeds, it’s unclear whether these trees can survive the worsening wildfires resulting from new climate extremes.
