Mattia was quick to react when the little grebe popped out of the reeds and began crossing the lake near his home. ‘I was curious,’ he says, ‘and lucky – the sun was in front of me and the grebe reached the brightest spot.’

Little grebes are agile underwater swimmers, aided by feet positioned far back on their bodies, that feed on small fish and invertebrates such as dragonfly larvae. They move awkwardly on land so build floating nests to breed
