Nayan captured this spectacle after monitoring the tide tables. In 2020 reduced human activity due to Covid-19 lockdowns meant record numbers of birds at the wetland and exceptionally clear air. ‘I have never seen such blue skies in Mumbai,’ Nayan says.
The flamingos arrive in December from the neighbouring state of Gujarat and depart the following June. They move close to the city during high water, when mangrove creeks are too flooded for them to feed. This wetland is now threatened by development.

Nayan is a self-taught nature photographer who has been documenting Indian wildlife for over 15 years. Being a biology teacher adds to his understanding of flora, fauna and animal behaviour on field assignments. After a long career in bird photography, he got to document big cats in urban areas. He aims to sensitise people to animal behaviour and raise awareness of India's rich wildlife heritage.
