In late spring and early summer, twilight extends through the night in northern Russia. Known as the season of the ‘white nights’, this is also the period in which many plants bloom – peak photography time for Alexandr. To frame this lily-of the-valley, Alexandr shot from below, placing the subject against the strange blue of the ‘white night’ sky.
This elegant plant is a herb found in woodlands across Europe and central Asia. Its arching stems of five to 10 small, white, sweet-scented flowers have become a northern-hemisphere symbol of May – the month in which it blooms there. Although previously endangered in parts of the world, the plant has flourished again following attempts to protect it.

Alexandr is an oceanologist and has always been attracted to photography. His photography is primarily close-ups and of flowers. He believes that flower photography is a year-round endeavour - when it's warm, he takes photos outdoors and in winter he works in his home photographic studio.
