The Asiatic cheetah is one of the rarest mammals on earth.
Fewer than 100 survive in the wild, and all of them are confined to Iran’s central desert, where I deployed camera traps. One of them captured this haunting image of a wary cat after dark that is struggling to eke out a living in bone-dry habitat where prey species have been decimated by hunters.

Over more than three decades Frans has set the standard for photographers. His images have been consistently original, characterised by signature eye-level perspectives and sophisticated lighting techniques. His many honours include the Wildlife Photographer of the Year Award, a Fellowship to the Royal Photographic Society, Sweden’s Lennart Nilsson Award and The Netherlands’ highest conservation honour, the Royal Order of the Golden Ark.
