Caring for Missy

Dan Kitwood's Image

Keeper Daouda Keita reached down to help Missy up onto his back. She is an orphan, one of 50 west African chimpanzees at the Chimpanzee Conservation Centre. Here Missy and two other infants are about to go on their daily outing into the bush to learn essential survival skills.

Guinea’s Chimpanzee Conservation Centre rehabilitates traumatised infant chimpanzees rescued from the illegal pet trade with the hope of releasing them into the wild. It’s a minimum 10-year process of care and compassion. Aged one on arrival, Missy has adapted well to her new environment with the help of the keepers who act as substitute mothers.
