Rosamund had waited two years to pursue her ambition to photograph mountain hares in the Cairngorms in Scotland, ‘so beautiful in their winter coats and showing such remarkable resilience’.
After several hours lying on the ground, Rosamund captured this hare as it scrabbled for food beneath the snow, conveying a sense of the animal’s determination in adversity. During winter, mountain hares shelter in shallow depressions in the ground called forms. Their mottled coats echo the snow-scattered hillside, interspersed with heather, their main winter food source. Usually found above 300 metres, the species exists in small isolated populations, making it vulnerable to threats such as extreme weather events.

Rosamund is a keen amateur photographer, and chair of the Keswick Photographic Society. Together with her husband, John, she has given illustrated talks, and uses her photography to raise money for charity. Her love of wildlife photography enables her to learn more about the animals she spends so many hours with.
