Alpine glider

Louis Pattyn's Image

Glimpses.

That’s all Louis had had so far, distant views of lammergeiers soaring over the Swiss Alps. On this morning, he watched and waited for hours in the cold with his father on a mountain ridge 2,270 metres above sea level, when finally one glided by, bathed in sunshine. Lammergeiers, also known as bearded vultures, travel up to 700 kilometres in a day foraging for carrion. Bones make up the majority of their diet, and they have a clever trick to get at the marrow inside. They drop them from 50 to 80 metres high onto rocks below, shattering them into more manageable pieces.
