Impression of Africa

Uge Fuertes Sanz's Image

It was Uge's first trip to Africa.

Settled beside a waterhole in Namibia's Etosha National Park, with a wealth of wildlife coming to drink close to where he was parked, it took him a while to decide what to work on. 'Finally,' he says, 'I released the frustrated painter in me' and concentrated on creating an impressionistic picture. Deciding on the structure of the composition, he waited many hours for a combination of animals that worked (finally, the galloping zebra, though there is also an oryx in front). 'The challenge', he explains, 'was making an elephant a foreground frame to a moving background,' as was getting the light exactly right without burning out the image. He took hundreds of pictures and, after eight hours of trying, he finally achieved satisfaction.
