Trees inundated by the reservoir, created from the damming of the Curuá Una River in Brazil’s Pará state, show another lost forest area.
‘It’s a stark reminder of the future for the vast area affected by the Belo Monte project,’ says Daniel. Studies of the reservoir have shown that hydroelectric dams in tropical forest areas emit more greenhouse gases (from decay, mainly) than does the generation of the same amount of energy from oil.

Over the past two decades, Daniel’s work has taken him to all seven continents. Spill, his exhibit of images documenting the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, premiered in August 2010 and has toured the globe. He is a fellow and board member of the International League of Conservation Photographers.
