Daniel knew that work on the Belo Monte Dam complex in Brazil was well under way, but was shocked by how advanced it was.

Designed to divert 80 per cent of the Xingu River, one of the Amazon’s major tributaries, the project will submerge more than 668 square kilometres. The direct and indirect impacts on wildlife and on people are already severe. Here, a canal gouges out a path through dense rainforest.

Over the past two decades, Daniel’s work has taken him to all seven continents. Spill, his exhibit of images documenting the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, premiered in August 2010 and has toured the globe. He is a fellow and board member of the International League of Conservation Photographers.
