Worming at dusk

Klaus Echle's Image

It had been raining all day.

There was no one else around, and Klaus knew this improved his chances of seeing a badger before nightfall. Most badgers on Mt Schauinsland, in southern Germany, have their setts on the forested lower slopes, but they venture up the mountain to forage for worms in the more open, cultivated areas. 'There is an endemic worm that lives here, which can grow to 60 centimetres (2 feet) in length, which may be one food they forage for,' says Klaus. Here an adult emerges from the misty twilight, foraging along a well-worn badger track. Klaus specializes in photographing the animals around his Black Forest home and uses his pictures to encourage people to respect the animals they share the land with.
