You can check S. Denford's paper (1978) Mites and their potential use in archaeology, pp77-83, in Research problems in zooarchaeology, eds. Brothwell, Thomas, Clutton-Brock, Occ. Public. No.3, London, Inst. of Archaeology.
If you get any other paper titles from this query, please let me know. I am also interested in mites and archeology. Thanks.

Dear colleagues,
let me inform you that Institute of Entomology of the Czech Academy of Sciences organizes VIth European Congress of Entomology which will be held in Ceske Budejovice, Czech Republic in August 23-29, 1998. Several workshops are planned for that Congress. One of them will concerns subject ARTHROPOD CUTICLE, conveners: S.O.Andersen (Denmark) and F. Weyda (Czech Republic). Workshop will cover several topics listed below (the list is not completed, it is possible to add some other subjects in relation to arthropod cuticle):
MORPHOLOGY AND ULTRASTRUCTURE
Proposed subjects: basic structural characteristics, difference between
cuticles of main arthropod groups, special cuticular layers like mesocuticle
and subcuticle etc., cuticle in specific areas: tendon,
in various sensory organs, transporting epithelia, peritrophic membrane,
stridulatory organs...
COMPOSITION OF CUTICLE
Proposed subjects: Chitin: structure, organization, biosynthesis, microarchitecture
in various types of cuticle, degradation.
Proteins: structure, properties, regional differentiation, hormonal
control of synthesis, modifications.
Lipids: Surface lipids, role for water impermeability, other roles,
cuticular lipids..
Sclerotization: Precursors, enzymes, chemistry, modification of
mechanical properties of cuticle, role for water content.
FUNCTIONAL ASPECTS
Proposed subjects: Cuticle and water: the role of cuticle in avoiding dessication, cuticle in transporting epithelia, differences between "hydrophilic" and "hydrophobic" cuticle, etc. The role of cuticle in arthropod defense systems, local destruction of cuticle by penetrating pathogens and other organisms (like entomoparasitic nematods).
CUTICULAR DYNAMICS
Proposed subjects: Hormones and cuticle, cuticular degradation...
VARIA various interesting results slightly outside of categories mentioned above
We are still looking for potential participants. I believe that
also cuticle of Acari is interesting subject for that workshop. For
example, I plan to present there some results concerning cuticle of spider
mites hoping that some other colleagues will attend us and presenth there
their interesting discoveries.
Please, contact me as soon as posssible (best
via e-mail) if you would like to obtain additional information (by e-mail)
and/or final circular (containing all necessary forms) by post. I would
by also grateful for any comment.
Thank you very much for your attention. Let me also wish to all acarologists HAPPY NEW YEAR 1998.
Sincerely,
Frantisek Weyda

The writer published in Bull.Annls.Soc. r. belge Ent. 131(1995):3-15 her findings at the archeological site of Baalbek, Lebanon, of acarian sculptures observed in the roof of the peristyle of the Roman temple of Bacchus. An abstract of the publication reads as follows: A series of four sculptures of Acarina, approximately 24 cm long andd 20cm wide have been recently discovered at the monumental Roman site in >Baalbek, Lebanon. At the temple of Bacchus carved onto the ceiling of the peristyle,19m high, on the northern side are four rhomboids, each containing a sculpture of an Acarina. While Acarina have been reported in literature since the time of Homer, about 850BC, it would appear that these would be the first recognizable representation of them." Dear Acarologists,
Does anyone know a source where I could obtain Tyrophagus spp. and Cheyletus eruditus for rearing? Your help would be much appreciated.

Subject: Artificial diets
I'd be very grateful to anyone who could offer me some practical advice on the subject of feeding Tetranychus urticae on artificial diets.
I've read Van der Geest et al.'s 1983 paper and prepared a diet in the way that they describe. However there are several practical aspects which I haven't sorted out. For example, do the mites feed better if they are placed on top or bottom of the diet sachet? Do they feed better on the diet after transfer from some plant species as opposed to others (as is the case with aphids). Do they feed better after starvation, if so, how long?
Thanks in advance,
Al

Hello colleagues,
Sorry to invidae your cyberspace, but I do need the following publication urgently. It is not available locally (South Africa), I am told by Inter Library Loans.

It was thus quoted by Binns, E. S. 1982 - Biol. Rev. 57:598

Dear Entomologists/Acarologists,
I have informed you some days ago on ARTHROPOD CUTICLE workshop which will be realized during European Cogress of Entomology (August 23-28, 1998). Let me inform you again on 2 new items:
1) New subsection has been added to ARTHROPOD CUTICLE workshop:
SENSORY ORGANS
Proposed subjects: Structure and function of sensory organs in arthropods
2) You may look directly to site www.entu.cas.cz/ece where you can find basic facts on Congress and workshops in sections COMMITEES, SECOND AND FINAL CIRCULAR and PRELIMINARY PROGRAM
Please, don't hesitate to contact me as soon as possible if you need more informations on ARHTROPOD CUTICLE workshop (including sending of printed version of final circular with forms) or if you plan to attend it to my e-mail address: weyda@entu.cas.cz
Thanks.

Der Friend
I'm a danish Veterinairian working in
a practice in the north western part of Denmark. Since I started my practice
in this part of the country I'm facing a the same problem every year in
the months of august and september. In a very distinct part of my district
there is a heavily infested area of the harvest mite(Trombolidae autumnalis).
In Denmark there is only 2 reported areas with this mite and my area seems
to be one of the most heavily infested areas in Europe and at the same
time it seems to be the most northern infested area. Beside attacks on
humans there is a lot of infestions on housbandory.
In this area there seems
to be a relation between infested areas and thicknes of soil laying direcly
over the chalk underground. Typically the soil layer don_t exceed 50 cm,
where You find the mite. The location Thisted is geological placed partly
on chalk underground(east part) and partly on other underlaying structures(clay
structures from the last glacier periode) (west and south part). The location
for finding the harvest mite is close related to the area first mentioned.
I found Your name on a list
of acarologists and therefor I would like to ask You, whether You have
found the same correlation between underground structure and mite findings.
If You know something about
relationship between soil structures and findings of Trombolidae or if
You in general knows a lot about this mite or can refer to litteratur about
the subject, please write me.
