Title | Alfred Russel Wallace, photograph of portrait |
Description | Alfred Russel Wallace. Black and white photograph of portrait of Wallace that hangs in the National Portrait Gallery, London. The original portrait was painted by an unknown artist over a photograph by Wallace's brother-in-law, Thomas Sims circa 1869. Wallace is seated in a chair presenting his left profile but turning to face the camera. He is holding a small notebook and to his right (our left) is a globe. These represent his travels to the Amazon and the Malay Archipelago. Behind him are books on shelves. We do not see Wallace full length but only to the knees. On the back of the photograph, written in pencil is "A R W 1869 and small size". Notes: 13 x 10 cm. Name: Wallace, Alfred Russel 1823-1913 |
