| Description | Scientists. 4 b/w photos of 4 different scientists. First photo (a) shows the German ornithologist Otto Finsch. Finsch is in profile turned to his right (our left) in Carte de visite format. Only head and shoulders are visible. Finsch has a beard and is wearing a bow tie, shirt, waistoact and jacket. Written underneath is "Otto Finsch - Ornithologist". The second photo (b) shows the entomologist Frederick Smith. This is a full length photo of him standing between a chair and a high carved table. He is looking towards the camera with his left hand on his left hip, but his body is turned towards his right (our left) side with his right hand resting on a book on the table. He has a chin beard and is dressed in long jacket, waistcoat and trousers. Frederick Smith worked at the British Museum (Natural History) and specialized in Hymenoptera. Underneath is written "Frederick Smith - Entomologist". The third photo (c) is of an elderly man sitting sideways on a chair with right leg crossed over left, hands clasped together in his lap and head turned slightly to his left (our right). we can only see as far as the knees. He has grey hair with a grey beard but no moustache. Dressed in waistcoat, jacket and trousers. Underneath is written "Henry Deane of Clapham". Probably Henry Deane a chemist who was also interested in microphotography and had a shop in Clapham. The last photo is John Smith of Malton. He is an elderly man sitting down and looking straight towards camera - a three quarter length view. He is holding a notebook in his left hand and a pencil or pen in his right hand. He has a bald head and long grey beard. He wears trousers, waistcoat and jacket. There is a watch on a chain attached to his waistcoat. Underneath is written " John Smith of Malton, author of Fruits and Farinacea : the proper food of man".
