TitleWrit Wallace v Hampden for libel
DescriptionWrit Wallace v Hampden for libel. 6 sheets of legal parchment pinned together with pen and ink handwriting on one side of each sheet. One half of the last sheet has written in large letters "In the Common Pleas, London, Wallace v Hampden, Writ of Inquiry, Thursday 27th July 1871". At the bottom is writtem " Charles E Shea, 36, King William Street, EC, Plantiff's account. On the top left hand corner (crosssed out) is written "A - In the London Bankruptcy Court - In the matter of John Hampden against whom a petition for adjudication of bankruptcy was filed on the day of February 1876". On the side in written in a different hand " The execution of this writ appears in the Inquistion annexed - Thomas Scambler Owden, Sheriffs, Robert Jones". Attached to the six sheets is a printed form - "London - an inquistion". The form concludes that Alfred Russel Wallace sustained damages to the sum of six hundred pounds. (However as Hampden declared himself bankrupt Wallace had to pay the costs)
